Food Inc

I don’t know if you all saw the movie or not but Food Inc is a must see! I am all about awareness and trying to make the best decision possible. I learned a lot from it, and it was interesting to learn where our food comes from and why it is how it is….

If you haven’t seen it, give it a rent. If you want to buy it amazon.com is running a special until (3/18/10) at midnight, it is only $9.99 with a free download for immediate viewing through amazon.com.

No More Crunches!!!

Why do we do crunches?  Does the “cost benefit-ratio” work?   Science tells us the answer is NO! For the past few years the fitness industry has been “up in arms” about whether or not to teach or train crunches anymore.  Being a Functional Trainer my answer is NO MORE CRUNCHES!  They are ineffective as a strengthening exercise and in fact could be damaging.

The “Core” (think abs, obliques, and lower back) was meant to work as a unit to transfer energy from your upper body to lower body and vise versa.   That being said, answer this question honestly…Do you sit more than half of the day?  I will be hard pressed to find anyone that said no to that question.  The fact is most of us sit more than 50% of the day and in that sitting position we all slouch putting pressure on the lower back.  Science tell us that repeated flexion of the lower back (like sitting all day and repeated crunches) is a great way to wear out the discs in your spine resulting in damage and pain in the lower back.

So you might wonder, what do I do to work my abs and core?  My answer is anything that asks your entire core to work together.  Things like planks, side planks, dead bugs, bridges, bird-dogs are all great exercises to are prove to work!  They all teach your ENTIRE midsection to work together, to be stronger, to reduce back pain, and to make us more efficient in all of our movements!
